Since its purchase in 1978 as completely undeveloped property, Grey Havens Farm has been nurtured into one of the most beautiful estates in San Juan County and has been featured on annual garden tours by the Orcas Island Garden Club twice within the past ten years. There has also been a tour by a mainland group of gardeners and on several occasions, a local artist has brought her class to paint. The owners have fond memories of the autumn foliage of the mountains of Virginia and have made every effort to ensure a display each fall – arguably the best in the islands. Other seasons have not been neglected and blooming plants may be found twelve months of the year. The flower garden emphasizes perennials and bulbs planted throughout. The dahlias have won Best of Show at the county fair. One of the owners is a certified Master Gardener, and both are past Presidents of the Orcas Island Garden Club. Altogether there are approximately 320 species of woody plants to be found in 545 varieties on the property (including 27 varieties of maple). A special feature is the orchard, in which may be found apples (26 kinds), pears, asian pears, cherries, plums, quince, medlars, peaches, figs, persimmons, grapes, kiwis, filberts, mulberries, etc. In the garden are blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, A gooseberries, currants, rhubarb, artichokes, and asparagus. Also on the property are chestnuts, walnuts and several rare nuts.
